In Memoriam -
Bob West remembered by his community and peers for his dedication to education and Idaho's Children.
"He was an educational icon. I've seldom met anyone with his intellect and the (ability to) be so compassionate about people. He could quote Idaho law right off the top of his head. He was short in stature and huge in nature. He could command a room just by walking in." - Bill Marineau, principal of West Park Elementary School in Moscow, as quoted by the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, March 20, 2008.
Idaho lost a giant advocate for children on Sunday, March 16, 2008, when Bob West passed away at his mountain retreat in Cascade. Bob served on the Board of Directors for Idaho Voices for Children and was known as the “go to” guy for facts, policy, and legislation, especially when the subject was education. Since 1974 Bob has worked in education at all levels in Idaho, concluding his career as Marilyn Howard’s Chief Deputy of Public Instruction. Bob was a regular presence at the Statehouse, and was sought out by legislators as a reliable source of information and a resourceful problem solver on educational issues.
It was a sign of Bob’s commitment that, shortly after retirement, he jumped right back into action by joining the board of Idaho Voices for Children. It was a gift to be able to work with a man with so many years of experience, especially in the early days when IVC was still getting on its feet. We’ll all miss Bob’s good humor and wisdom.
